‘2 lakh-strong army’ with no caste or gender bar: Shankaracharya unveils ‘army’ plan

In a controversial announcement, Avimukteshwaranand has unveiled plans to form a two-lakh-strong ‘army’ aimed at protecting cow progeny and Hinduism. The religious leader, currently in Varanasi, said the proposed force—named ‘Chaturangini Sena’—will include members from all castes, as well as men, women, and individuals from the third gender.

Detailing the initiative, Avimukteshwaranand said the ‘army’ would comprise around 2.18 lakh volunteers and would be formally launched in Prayagraj on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya next year. He explained that the term ‘Chaturangini Sena’, rooted in ancient Indian texts like the Mahabharata, refers to a four-fold army consisting of infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariots.

The Shankaracharya stated that the proposed force would be equipped with both traditional and modern weapons and would work towards safeguarding religion, culture, and society. During the announcement, he and his supporters were seen holding symbolic axe models, underscoring the martial nature of the initiative.

However, the declaration has drawn the attention of authorities, with administrative sources indicating that the situation is being closely monitored. Officials have pointed out that possession or display of unlicensed weapons could invite legal action, and any such mobilisation would be subject to existing laws and regulations.

The announcement comes amid recent controversies surrounding the religious leader. He had earlier criticised Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during a public event, and was also named in a complaint under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, allegations he has denied. The developments have added further scrutiny to his latest proposal, even as debates continue over its intent and implications.
